Lenovo’s approach to mitigating climate change is built on a solid foundation of policy, strategy, and an ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management System (EMS).
Lenovo’s mature ISO 14001 EMS gives us a strong framework on which to set annual targets to help us drive progress towards our 2030 and 2050 net-zero SBTi goals.
Lenovo is working both internally and externally to minimize and mitigate climate risks. It is committed to reducing the global carbon footprint of its business activities and has demonstrated its commitment by:
All of this is controlled and monitored by our EMS. It reflects our commitment to design and manufacture environmentally conscious products that minimize environmental impact, and to continually improve our performance in this area.

Our policy recognizes that climate change is a serious threat and expresses our belief that we should all do our part to reduce harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Signed by Yuanqing Yang, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, it applies to all Lenovo operations and activities.

Our strategy focuses on the following five key areas:
In each of these areas, we identify and work with partners to drive and facilitate global, national and local GHG emission reductions.
Lenovo supports multi-stakeholder efforts to drive progress in climate change mitigation through the following activities:
Jointly initiated the China Low Carbon Alliance
Lenovo Signed the We Mean Business Initiative
Lenovo Signed the American Business Act on Climate Pledge
Lenovo presented at the inaugural meeting of the China Green Manufacturing Alliance
Lenovo joined the Product Attribute to Impact Algorithm (PAIA) Project, a collaboration led by Quantis and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), to streamline Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) for Information and Communications Technology products. For more information, click here.
Lenovo’s emission reduction targets are approved as science-based by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Lenovo was selected to participate and road test the SBTi Net-Zero Standard before it was launched in October 2021.
Lenovo signed the SBTi Commitment Letter pledging to set net-zero targets, including a long-term science-based target by aligning with 1.5°C campaign.
On January 19, Lenovo became the first group of companies to receive net-zero validation from Science Based Targets initiative, making it the first PC and smartphone maker and one of only 139 companies around the world with targets validated by the Net-Zero Standard.
Each year, as part of our EMS process, we set company-wide objectives and targets (O&Ts). These O&Ts address areas identified as significant for Lenovo, and, with regard to climate change, include energy consumption, associated GHG emissions, and resulting climate change impacts. Within the framework of Lenovo’s EMS, metrics and controls are established and performance relative to these metrics are tracked and reported. To learn more about our EMS Objectives and Targets, view Section 8.0 of our FY 2022/23 Lenovo Sustainability Report here.
Lenovo is fully committed to carbon footprint reduction in its operations. In December 2022, the Company updated its short-term science-based emissions reduction targets and established its net-zero targets, which were validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Click here for more information.
For near-term targets, its Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction targets are consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C, the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement, and its Scope 3 emissions reduction targets meet ambitious criteria according to the SBTi’s methodology, which means they are in line with current best practices. For net-zero targets, the Company will achieve 90% emission reduction in Scope 1, 2, and 3.
In designing our solutions, we seek to prioritize energy efficiency first, drive installation of onsite renewable energy generation second and purchase renewable energy commodities or carbon offsets third.
In addition to initiating projects to improve energy efficiency and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions across our organization, we are looking to increase Lenovo's use of renewable energy globally.
These targets have a base year of FY 2018/19, near-term target year of FY 2029/30, and net-zero target year of FY 2049/50. The following table details the Company’s Science-Based Targets, road maps for their achievement, and progress against the targets in FY 2022/23.
