Intel® Broadwell vs Skylake processors: what are the differences?

The Intel® Broadwell and Skylake processors are the company's 5th and 6th generation chipsets, respectively. Released over the course of late 2014 and 2015, these new processor lines bring about all new capabilities to desktop and laptop devices. The Broadwell quad-core processor is essentially a smaller, more efficient version of the Intel® 4th generation Haswell chip. At just 14nm in size, it is incredibly small, which means it uses less energy and produces less heat, while maintaining the clock speed of the processor it replaces. The Skylake, smaller even than the Broadwell, is the latest chipset from Intel®, and is offered in multiple versions.

Why consider Broadwell?

In the debate that is Intel® Skylake vs. Broadwell, it pays to know what you want out of your device. Individuals who want a device that is sufficient to run the latest applications, but don't require the latest and most advanced processor on the market, will likely find that the Broadwell processor is a better option for them. This is because on average, the Broadwell chip is slightly more affordable than the Skylake.

Though the two chipsets were released at roughly the same time, it's important to remember that the Skylake is technically one generation newer. With four cores and ample memory, however, the Broadwell is still a capable processor. Furthermore, Skylake processors are physically smaller than their Broadwell counterparts, meaning less space is required for the motherboard, which makes room for larger batteries. Finally, they require less energy and produce less heat. Put simply, the benefits of the Skylake processor are many.
